The Government chief visited Loc An-Binh Son resettlement site covering an area of 282 ha where technical infrastructure development is underway.

This is one of the two resettlement areas to relocate people to make way for the construction of the Long Thanh International Airport which is one of the key national project that would have significant impact on the Southern key economic region.

As total capital for site clearance work amounts to VND 23,000 billion (over US$1 billion), PM Phuc ordered drastic efforts to complete this work by October this year.

He also urged the Ministry of Transport and the Airports Corporations of Viet Nam (ACV) to quickly finalize the feasibility report of the project and submit to the State Appraisal Council for approval, which should be done at the same time with site clearance work.

The first phase of the Long Thanh International Airport was approved by the National Assembly last November.

After the first phase is complete, the airport will have one runway and one terminal with the capacity of handling 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo a year.

Total investment for the first phase is set to cost almost VND111.69 trillion, or US$4.8 billion.

Once all three phases of the project are completed by 2050 at a total cost of US$16 billion, it will be able to handle 100 million passengers a year, picking up overflow from the Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, which is currently operating at far above its designed capacity./.
